Relationship & Health Education

At Shakespeare Infant School, we believe Relationships and Health Education (RHE) should support children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We take a holistic approach to children's development, recognising the importance of their intellectual, spiritual, moral and social growth. Our school learning values of independence, thinking, collaboration, spirituality, emotional intelligence and creativity are woven throughout the curriculum, helping children develop the knowledge, skills and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.

Children learn to understand themselves, build positive relationships and appreciate the diverse world around them. We recognise that children are growing up in an ever-changing society and aim to develop their understanding of diversity, equality, respect and responsibility. Through engaging learning experiences, children are encouraged to become active members of their school community and develop the confidence to make positive contributions to society.

Learning is carefully structured around three key themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. These themes are revisited and developed throughout children's time at school, allowing them to build upon prior knowledge and deepen their understanding as they mature. Age-appropriate Relationships and Sex Education is integrated throughout the curriculum, supporting children to develop healthy, respectful relationships.

Through discussion, reflection, stories, visual stimuli and collaborative activities, children are encouraged to express their thoughts, consider different viewpoints and develop empathy for others. Our ‘We Care’ ethos promotes kindness, respect and emotional wellbeing, providing regular opportunities for children to reflect on important issues and understand their role within the wider community.

Through our RHE curriculum, we aim to develop confident, respectful and reflective individuals who understand how to keep themselves healthy and safe, value positive relationships and are well prepared for the opportunities and responsibilities they will encounter throughout their lives.
